Blue Knights Bring Home G-MAC Championship
Mar. 9th, 2013Playing for a conference championship for the first time in five seasons, the Urbana University women's basketball team entered this weekend's inaugural G-MAC Tournament with championship intentions. As an added incentive, Urbana hoped to avenge a three-point loss to their opponent in the championship game, Trevecca Nazarene University.
Two weeks ago in Nashville, the TNU Trojans held off a late charge from the Blue Knights to capture the first regular season G-MAC title. With that win, TNU also earned the right to host this weekend's conference tournament as the top seed. Unfortunately for the Trojans, the home court advantage didn't help on Saturday afternoon as the second-seeded Blue Knights traveled to Nashville and brought home the hardware after a 70-63 victory in the G-MAC Championship. Ciara Geiger led all scorers with 20 points in the win. The sophomore guard fell just 30 points shy of Urbana's all-time single season scoring mark. Geiger was 7 of 10 from the field with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Read More
Urbana Advances to G-MAC Championship
Mar. 8th, 2013After missing out on a regular season G-MAC title by just three points in the final game of the regular season, the Urbana University women's basketball team returned to the scene of the heartbreaking loss and began working towards a conference tournament championship on Friday night. The second-seeded Blue Knights defeated third-seeded Cedarville University 74-71 in thrilling fashion in the first semifinal game hosted by top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University.
The win over the long-time rival Yellow Jackets was the first step towards total redemption for the Blue Knights. Urbana took two of three against Cedarville one year after the Yellow Jackets took two of three from Urbana, including a win in the season-ending D-II Ohio Independents' Championship last March. Now, the Blue Knights have their sights set on top-seeded TNU. The Trojans denied Urbana a regular season conference title in Nashville two weeks ago in the regular season finale. On Saturday afternoon, the two teams will face off for a third time in a span of five weeks with the G-MAC hardware on the line. DeVonyea Johnson led all scorers with 22 points in Friday night's semifinal win over Cedarville. Read More
