Johnson Named MEC Player of the Week
Urbana point guard DeVonyea Johnson has been named the Mountain East Conference Player of the Week after leading the Blue Knights to a 3-0 week.
Johnson, a senior from Ypsilanti, Mich., averaged 24.3 points, 6.3 assists and 5.0 rebounds in three games for the Blue Knights. Against non-conference foe Cedarville, Johnson went on a 10-0 run by herself in the final 2:18 of the game to seal the victory for Urbana. After a 21-point, 7-assist performance against Wheeling Jesuit, Johnson provided more late-game heroics against West Liberty hitting the game-winning shot with 1.5 seconds to lift the Blue Knights to a 75-74 win over the 'Toppers. Urbana University senior point guard DeVonyea Johnson is making a strong early case to be named the Mountain East Conference's inaugural player of the year. Johnson capped an amazing week with a game-winner at West Liberty University on Saturday afternoon. Her lay-in with two seconds left helped the Blue Knights down the Toppers 75-74.
The conference's second leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, Johnson led all scorers on Saturday with 24 in just 26 minutes. She knocked down 7 of her 14 attempts from the field to drop her season shooting percentage to 56%. Johnson also averages 5.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.6 steals a game. Urbana University senior point guard DeVonyea Johnson has had more than a few memorable moments in her four-year career against the Blue Knights' biggest rival, Cedarville University. Johnson saved her best performance for last on Tuesday night in Cedarville's Callan Athletic Center. Urbana's leading scorer erupted for a game-high 28 points, including 11 of the Blue Knights' final 12 points, as the visitors pulled away in a 96-91 road win. Read More
UU Stays Unbeaten in MEC, Clips Concord 78-75Nov. 25th, 2013
The Urbana University women's basketball team will return from their latest road trip with a pair of important MEC road wins after knocking off Concord University 78-75 on Monday afternoon. Urbana remains unbeaten in MEC play after a successful 2-0 road trip to Virginia-Wise and Concord on Saturday and Monday.
Monday's battle with the Mountain Lions came down to the wire. The evenly matched squads each shot 40% from the field, but it was Blue Knight Lexie Taylor's lay-up with 12 seconds remaining that gave the visitors a three-point lead late.
