UU Thumps Thorobreds on Senior Day
URBANA, Ohio (October 27, 2012) - On Senior Day in the regular season home finale at Urbana University, the Blue Knight volleyball team swept the Thorobreds from Kentucky State University 25-18, 25-9, 25-12.
Before the match, Urbana honored its three seniors, Katie Miller, Amy Hickman and Karla Vogel, and during the match, their teammates sent their veterans out on a high note with a dominant victory. Urbana hit .511 as a team. It's the second time this week Urbana connected on more than half of their attempts in a straight-sets victory.
With the win, Urbana ends its home slate with a 6-4 record at the Grimes Center this season. Exactly one month ago, Urbana swept the Thorobreds in Frankfort, Kentucky. Urbana improves to 9-18 overall, including an 8-5 mark in their last 13 matches. Kentucky State's loss was their ninth straight in straight sets. The Thorobreds drop to 12-22 overall.
Spurring the Blue Knights to victory was freshman setter Mary Hendricks. Hendricks was 8 for 8 on attacks. She also handed out a match-high 39 assists and added 8 digs and an ace. Sophomore hitter Kelsey Volkmer racked up a match-high 22 kills to go with 9 digs and a couple of blocks. Junior hitter Chelsea Winderl added 8 kills in 16 attempts before leaving late in the match with an apparent knee injury. Senior Katie Miller led the charge defensively, racking up a career-high and match-high 15 digs. Hickman chipped in 11 digs and Vogel added 7 in their home finales.
On Tuesday night, the Blue Knights travel to Cedarville University for a conference showdown. Urbana currently sits in second place in the G-MAC, one loss behind the Yellow Jackets, who defeated the Blue Knights 3-0 in Urbana back on September 18th. A Cedarville win would all but clinch the regular season title and right to host the conference post-season tournament. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. [Box Score]
