Volkmer Powers Volleyball to a Pair of G-MAC Wins
URBANA, Ohio (September 29, 2012) - Urbana University sophomore hitter Kelsey Volkmer (Galion, OH/Colonel Crawford HS) turned in a record breaking performance on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Knight volleyball team swept a pair of crucial conference matches against visiting Trevecca Nazarene and Ursuline. The tri-match sweep allows Urbana to leapfrog both the Trojans and the Arrows in the G-MAC season standings. Urbana has won three straight matches after opening the season with just one win in their first 14 contests.
Volkmer's dominance began in a wild five-set victory over Trevecca Nazarene. Urbana dropped the first set 25-18 before bouncing back with 25-13, 25-18 wins in the second and third sets. On more than one occasion, the Blue Knights had match point on the Trojans in the fourth set, but the visitors survived with a thrilling 32-30 win to send the game into a tiebreaking fifth set. There, Volkmer vaulted the Blue Knights by the Trojans with several of her school-record 37 kills as Urbana trumped the Trojans 15-3.
Volkmer's 37 kills crushed her old NCAA Division II school record by 12 kills. The all-time UU school record was 28 kills by Lori Maloch in 2001. Volkmer hit an incredible .479 as she committed just 3 hitting errors on her school-record 71 attempts. Freshman Mary Hendricks was Volkmer's biggest helper, dishing out a career-high 51 assists, which was just 3 shy of the school record. Hendricks was also one of seven Blue Knights to record double-digit digs. Hendricks had 16. Amy Hickman (24), Kaci Eurez (16), Volkmer (16), Kayli Lucius (15), Karla Vogel (13), and Katie Miller (12) also eclipsed double digit digs in the win. Urbana racked up a school record 114 total digs in the win. Lucius also contributed 6 aces, which ties her for fourth all-time at UU in a single match.
Total team domination was the story in the night cap against Ursuline. After the Arrows narrowly fell to TNU 27-25, 26-24, 25-23, the Blue Knights completed the clean sweep with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-22 win over Ursuline. Volkmer again led the way with 16 kills, giving her an astounding 53 kills in 8 sets on Saturday. She was topped by teammate Katlin Kremer in hitting percentage. Kremer had 12 kills and just 1 error, hitting a team-best .458 in the win. Kremer also recorded double figures in kills with 11 in the win over TNU. Hendricks added 32 assists against Ursuline, and Volkmer (12), Hickman (11), and Lucius (10) tallied double-digit digs again.
Urbana hopes to resume its three-match winning streak at another home tri-match next Saturday. The Blue Knights host Fairmont State and the third ranked team in NCAA D-III, Wittenberg University. Matches will again be played at 11, 1 and 3 in Urbana's Grimes Center. [Box Score vs. TNU][Box Score vs. Ursuline]
