UU Volleyball Snaps Skid, Thumps Thorobreds
FRANKFORT, Kentucky (September 27, 2012) - The Urbana University volleyball team ended a a difficult 9-game losing streak in dominant fashion on Thursday night at Kentucky State University.
The Blue Knights thumped the Thorobreds in straight sets, 25-18, 25-9, 25-19, behind a balanced attack. Hitters Kelsey Volkmer and Katlin Kremer each recorded double-digit kills up front for Urbana. Volkmer finished with 13 kills, while Kremer tallied 11. Freshman setter Mary Hendricks was busy all night long, handing out a career-high tying 28 assists. Senior co-captain Karla Vogel led the team in points, serving an incredible 21 times for the Blue Knights. Defensively, the Blue Knights were led by the trio of Kayli Lucius, Amy Hickman and Vogel. Lucius led the way with 7 digs. Co-captains Hickman and Vogel each added 5 digs.
The win was Urbana's first true road win since September 26th of last year, snapping a skid of 12 straight road defeats. Thirteen of the Blue Knights' first 15 matches this season were played away from home, but each of their next 4 matches will be played in the Grimes Center, beginning with a home tri-match on Saturday. Urbana welcomes G-MAC opponents Trevecca Nazarene and Ursuline to the Grimes Center for three straight matches, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
