Volleyball Stung by Yellow Jackets
URBANA, Ohio (September 18, 2012) - The Urbana University volleyball team dropped their first home match of the season on Tuesday night, falling in straight sets in their G-MAC conference opener against visiting Cedarville University. The Blue Knights played well early in each set, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away for a convincing 25-17, 25-17, 25-14 win.
Cedarville improves to 12-1 overall and 1-0 in conference, while the Blue Knights fall to 1-12 and 0-1 in G-MAC play.
Urbana jumped out to early leads of 5-1 and 11-8 in the first two sets, but the accurate Yellow Jacket attack was too much for Urbana. Six different Yellow Jackets hit over .400 for the match, led by Tori Thompson's high-mark of .588 (10 kills, 0 errors, 17 attempts). As a team, Cedarville hit .365 while Urbana managed to hit just over .200 for the match.
The Blue Knights were led by sophomore Kelsey Volkmer's 9 kills. Katlin Kremer added 6 kills and hit a team-high .263. Freshman setter Mary Hendricks handed out 15 assists. Karla Vogel added 7 assists, leaving her 3 shy of 2,500 career assists.
Defensively, the Blue Knights were led by Kayli Lucius' 10 digs. Lucius also had Urbana's only ace of the night.
Next, Urbana travels to Lima, Ohio to take on the Racers from the University of Northwestern Ohio. The match is next Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. [Box Score]
