Volleyball's Road Woes Continue
CHARLESTON, West Virginia (September 12, 2012) - The Urbana University volleyball team continued to struggle on the road on Tuesday night, dropping a 3-0 decision at the University of Charleston. The Blue Knights battled all night long, but fell just short by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-20. Urbana is 0-9 away from the Grimes Center this season. The team's lone win came in straight sets in the home opener a week ago. Urbana's last victory away from the Grimes Center came last October 1st, a stretch of 16 straight matches.
Despite the loss, several Blue Knights played well. Sophomore Kelsey Volkmer continued her strong play up front, finishing with a match-high 12 kills on 28 attempts. She notched just 1 hitting error, posting an impressive attack percentage of .393. Hitters Megan Verhoff and Katlin Kremer were right behind Volkmer with 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Senior co-captain Karla Vogel turned in a strong performance, finishing with 13 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Freshman Mary Hendricks led the squad with 18 assists to go with 6 digs. Volkmer and freshman Maci Jones led UU with 2 blocks apiece.
Urbana will attempt to break its 16-match winless streak away from home on Saturday in a tri-match at nationally ranked Wheeling Jesuit University. The Blue Knights take on the 21st ranked Cardinals at 4 p.m. Afterwards, Urbana meets Lock Haven University on WJU's home court at 6 p.m.
