Urbana Scores Major Upset over D-I Wright State
FAIRBORN, Ohio (May 1, 2013) - The Urbana University baseball team scored a signature victory over Division I Wright State University on Wednesday night. Urbana entered the contest 0-5 all-time against the Raiders, but by the end of the night, the Blue Knights could boast one of the biggest wins in program history, a 6-4 victory under the lights at Nischwitz Stadium.
The win is Urbana's third over a D-I opponent during the Mike Goldschmidt era. Goldschmidt guided the Blue Knights to wins at the University of Dayton in 2008 and Chicago State University in 2009. Urbana has been close to knocking off the Raiders in their two previous meetings. Last season, Wright State held off their D-II opponents 6-4 and two seasons ago, Urbana fell just 3 runs short.
A huge sixth inning on Wednesday night ensured Urbana wouldn't fall short again. The visitors racked up 6 runs in the decisive inning. After a leadoff fly out, Robert Tavone Jr. drew the first of 5 Urbana walks in the inning. Reigning G-MAC Player of the Week Greg Liming drove in Tavone Jr. with a double to left field, and Liming scored on Colt Turley's base hit. Aaron Bingham followed with another single, and Cody Ridinger walked to load the bases. Walks to Chris Allen and Drew Ryan followed, scoring two more runs. After the second Wright State pitching change of the inning, Jose Vargas drove in the sixth and final run of the inning on a fielder's choice.
Urbana starter Tom Piatt cruised through the first five inning, allowing just two hits, but the Raiders chased him from the game with 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth. Justin Robinson relieved Piatt and pitched Urbana out of the jam. The Raiders scored one more run off Robinson in the eighth, but senior Josh Weber came in and closed out the Raiders in the bottom of the ninth. Piatt's win was his team-leading sixth of the season. Weber's save was his third. Ridinger was the only Blue Knight with more than one hit in the win, finishing 2 for 3 with a run.
The win is Urbana's 20th of the season. The Blue Knights have reached the 20-win plateau in each of the past two seasons. Wright State slips to 18-22 with their fourth straight loss. Urbana hosts its regular season finale on Friday at 2:00 p.m. It's Senior Day for Urbana. The team will honor its 8 seniors between the doubleheader with Ohio Christian University. [Box Score]
