Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Vogel to Speak at All-Sports Athletic Banquet

URBANA, Ohio (April 12, 2013) - The Urbana University Athletic Department will host its third annual all-sports athletic awards banquet on Saturday, April 27th. The athletic department, including student-athletes and coaches from all 15 Blue Knight athletic teams, will gather on the same night to honor Urbana University's top student-athletes during the 2012-13 school year.

The banquet will be held in the Warren G. Grimes Center Gymnasium this year. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., and the awards presentation will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Matt Vogel will be the featured speaker at the event. Vogel competed in the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics for Team USA. The Ft. Wayne, Indiana native won gold in the 100-meter butterfly. He also swam a leg on the team’s 4x100 medley relay team that set a new world record and captured another gold medal for Vogel.

Prior to making the Olympic team, Vogel was an individual NCAA Champion in the 100-yard fly as a freshman at the University of Tennessee. After winning his Olympic gold medals, Vogel returned to swim for the Volunteers, helping the squad claim the 1978 NCAA National Championship.

Currently, Vogel is the Head Swimming Coach at Fort Wayne Aquatics in his hometown. In 1996, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Tickets for the banquet are on sale now. The cost of the banquet is $20 for non-UU student-athletes. (UU student-athletes do not have to pay to attend the banquet.) The event is open to friends, family and the general public. Tickets may be purchased through coaches or at the UU Athletic Offices located in the Grimes Center during regular business hours.

The awards ceremony will conclude at approximately 9:00 p.m. with the presentation of six Urbana University Athletic Department awards. A student-athlete and a member of the local community will receive the Community Service Award. A male and female student-athlete will receive the Academic Achievement Award, and at the end of the night, a male and female student-athlete will be named the Blue Knight Student-Athletes of the Year.
