Blue Knight Swimmers Sweep Bethany

BETHANY, West Virginia (January 28, 2012) - On Saturday afternoon at Bethany College, the Blue Knight men’s and women’s swim teams capped a successful weekend with a sweep of the Bison. Urbana’s men walked away with a 101-25 win and improve their record to 10-5 overall. The women’s pulled out a nail-biter by the score of 107-101, and set the new school record for wins by the women's swim team with their 7th victory on the season.  The Lady Knights improve to 7-8 overall.

The Blue Knights placed 7 individual winners on the men side. Alexander Parks and Matt Stover led the Blue Knights with 2 first place finishes on the afternoon. Alexander Parks won the 100 yard backstroke and 50 yard freestyle, while Matt Stover captured 1st in the 1,000 yard freestyle and 200 yard backstroke. Other winners for the men’s team were Cody Byrd (200 free), Brian Hurley (100 breast), and Kim Helander (100 free). The 200 yard medley team of Matt Stover, Alexander Espinoza, Kim Helander, and Paul Miller kept their winning streak alive with a first place time of 1:45.24.

The women’s swim team had 5 individual wins on the day in a 6-point victory. Bethany McNutt and Breanne Schroeder led the way with 4 of the 5 individual wins for the Blue Knights. McNutt placed first in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke, while Schroeder won the 200 and 500 yard freestyles. Fourth-year senior Sarah St. Clair contributed another 1st place finish in the 200 yard IM. The relay team of McNutt, Schroeder, Samantha Cowgill, and Rachel Kelly also took first and sealed the team victory with a time of 2:08.80.

The Blue Knight swim teams went 3-1 on the road this weekend. Next Saturday afternoon, both squads will compete in a five-team meet at Asbury College starting at 1:00 P.M.  [Results]
