Blue Knights Rout Rams on Senior Day
URBANA, Ohio (October 19, 2012) - On a soggy Senior Day at Urbana University Stadium, the Blue Knight women's soccer team defeated the visiting Rams from Ohio Mid-Western College by a score of 3-0. Six Blue Knight seniors helped Urbana secure its seventh victory of the season by winning the final home game of their collegiate careers.
The six seniors are the foundation of a Blue Knight squad that has made remarkable strides since last season's 5-12-1 campaign. Abby Pearson, Roniqua Scott, Brooke Smith, Meghan Taucher, Mikaela Tolbert and Samantha Trick are the only 6 Blue Knights to start all 15 games this season. Together, they were honored at halftime on Friday night, along with their fallen teammate Andia Shisler, who passed away in a car accident in the middle of her freshman season at UU.
Against Ohio Mid-Western, Urbana started the scoring early. The home team scored twice on their first four shots. Pearson connected in the 11th minute on a blast from 25 yards out to put the Blue Knights on top 1-0. A minute and a half later, Pearson provided the assist on junior Brittany Mazzu's fourth goal of the season.
Before the half ended, Pearson picked up her second assist. The fifth-year senior's pass was deflected into the Rams' goal by freshman Brandi VanderYacht. The goal was the first of VanderYacht's career, and the last of the day for the Blue Knights.
Senior goalkeeper Meghan Taucher made a couple of saves to earn her third shutout in the past four games. Taucher now has 11 career solo shutouts, which is just five behind the all-time Urbana record.
On Tuesday, Urbana (7-6-2) travels to Salem International University to take on the Tigers at 4:00 p.m. The Blue Knights defeated the Tigers 6-0 in last year's season finale. [Box Score]
