TNU Tops UU, Takes Control of G-MAC
URBANA, Ohio (October 11, 2012) - Just 24 hours after playing to a scoreless, double-overtime draw, the Urbana University women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss in their conference opener. The visiting Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University shut out Urbana to take a commanding lead in the G-MAC standings. The Trojans are a 2-0-0 with just one game remaining against Ursuline College at Urbana on Saturday. A Trojan win on the neutral field wraps up the regular season championship and the right to host the post-season tournament.
With the loss, Urbana falls back to .500 overall at 6-6-1. The Blue Knights are 0-1-0 in G-MAC play with games remaining against Cedarville and Ursuline.
Trevecca and Urbana entered Thursday's game with the top two defenses in the conference in terms of shutouts, and it appeared early on that the Blue Knights might be headed for their second scoreless draw in a row. That quickly changed when the Trojans struck gold on their first shot of the day in the 31st minute. The G-MAC's leading scorer, TNU's Brooke Gann, controlled an Alex Hammond pass in the Blue Knights' box, and in one motion, she turned and scored with a blast inside the far post. The game-winner came on the Trojans only shot on goal in the half.
Urbana's best opportunity for an equalizer came with just 11 minutes to play. Mikaela Tolbert, Brittany Mazzu and Hannah Rembach all fired shots in a 10 second span, but all 3 attempts were blocked by Trojans sacrificing their bodies to preserve the lead. Urbana fell in their first meeting with the Trojans despite out-shooting their opponents 8-7.
Urbana's next opponent is another G-MAC foe. On Tuesday, the Blue Knights travel to Cedarville (1-1-0 in G-MAC play) for a 7:00 p.m. game under the lights. Cedarville swept a pair of close decisions against Urbana last season. [Box Score]
