Scoreless Draw Ends UU-WJU Affair

URBANA, Ohio (October 10, 2012) - On a windy afternoon at home, the Urbana University women's soccer team picked up its first tie of the 2012 season after a scoreless draw decided the outcome of a match with the visiting Cardinals from Wheeling Jesuit University.  Urbana moves to 6-5-1 with the tie.  The Blue Knights have dropped just one game in the past month, going 6-1-1 in those contests.  Wheeling Jesuit's record moves to 3-8-2.  Both teams will see each other next season as new members of the Mountain East Conference.  WJU leads the all-time series 2-1-1.

The home team outshot the Cardinals 10-2 in the first half, but neither team could capitalize.  Urbana had six first half corner kicks compared to Wheeling Jesuit's zero, but nearly every Urbana header sailed high.

The Cardinals' best opportunity to break the tie came early in the second half on the visitors' second corner kick of the game.  A Cardinal blast would have found the back of the net if not for game-saving stops by senior defender Brooke Smith and senior goalkeeper Meghan Taucher (pictured above).  After that, neither team could fight through the wind to end the game in regulation or overtime.

Taucher made 8 saves to earn her third solo shutout of the season and ninth of her career.  It's the 4th time Taucher earned a shutout in a 0-0 draw.  The Blue Knights are right back on it tomorrow at home.  Urbana hosts G-MAC foe Trevecca Nazarene University at 3:30 p.m.  The game is Urbana's first conference affair of the season.
