Freshmen, Mazzu Power Women's Soccer to 3-2 Win
GOSHEN, Indiana (September 22, 2012) - Trailing 1-0 early, the Urbana University women's soccer team called upon a pair of freshmen to bring the Blue Knights back under the lights on Saturday night at Goshen College. Collegiate rookies Bailey Domer and McKensey Cross scored the equalizer and go-ahead goals in an 11-minute span late in the first half, but it was the veteran, Brittany Mazzu's second half goal that proved to be the game-winner as Urbana stormed back in a 3-2 road win.
Urbana improves to 3-4-0 on the season after a run of three straight wins. Goshen falls below .500 for the first time this season after suffering their fourth straight loss. The Maple Leafs sit at 4-5-0 with the loss.
Domer's first career goal came in the 31st minute from 7 yards out with the Blue Knights trailing 1-0. A Brooke Smith free kick found the head of Wimmers in front of Goshen's box. Wimmers' touch deflected the ball to a wide open Domer all alone on the backside. Domer plucked the ball out of the air with her left foot and beat the Leaf keeper for the equalizer.
Then, with just three minutes left in the half, Titus sent a ball ahead to a streaking Cross. Cross' initial attempt was deflected by a diving Goshen keeper, but Cross stayed with it and tapped it into an empty net for her second goal during Urbana's three-game winning streak.
After the Maple Leafs tied it at two early in the second half, Urbana answered again. Senior Abby Pearson fired a shot across the box that Goshen keeper Lynn Weaver had to dive to deflect. The rebound leaked to the backside where a wide open Mazzu was unchecked. The junior scored easily.
The Blue Knight defense, led by senior keeper Meghan Taucher and senior defender Mikaela Tolbert, made the lead stand this time. Taucher finished with 5 saves to pick up her third straight win in goal. Tolbert singlehandedly stopped a couple of the Leafs' best scoring opportunities down the stretch to preserve the win.
The Blue Knights don't have long to enjoy the win. The team stays in Indiana to take on Indiana Tech on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. [Box Score]
