Upset Bid Falls Short Against #2 Gannon
URBANA, Ohio (October 6, 2012) - On Saturday afternoon at home, the Urbana University men's soccer team may have outplayed the #2 team in the nation, but the Blue Knights came away with a 2-0 loss to Gannon University.
Urbana tallied more shots and shots on goal, but the Golden Knights capitalized on their opportunities to escape with their tenth victory of the season. The Blue Knights have dropped two straight against teams ranked 11th or better in Division II.
The Golden Knights got the first goal early. With the wind at their backs, the visitors took a 1-0 lead after 26 minutes of play on Adam Sharbaugh's fourth goal of the season. At the half, Urbana owned a 10-3 advantage on shots, but their best opportunities to score missed by mere inches. First, Tyler Wason's helicopter kick found the post. Then, Carl Peers sent a laser that sailed just above the crossbar.
Gannon got their second goal at the start of the second half. It came on just their third shot of the game. In the 51st minute, Sean Pike beat the NCAA Division II leader in saves, UU keeper Darragh McGinley, to give the Golden Knights a 2-0 advantage.
Urbana kept the pace fast and frenetic the rest of the way, but the Blue Knights were stonewalled by Gannon's nationally ranked defense. A.J. Bokeno had one of the best looks in the second half, but his shot, like Peers' in the first half, sailed just above the crossbar.
On Monday afternoon, Urbana (6-4-1) plays its fourth straight opponent to appear in the national rankings this season when the 5-3-1 Timberwolves from Northwood University come to town. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. [Box Score]
