Men's Soccer Stuns Walsh 3-0
URBANA, Ohio (September 4, 2012) - Less than a minute into the contest, the Walsh University men's soccer team realized they would have their hand full with Urbana University on Tuesday night. On their first possession of the game, Urbana scored a goal on their way to a 3-0 home victory over the Cavs.
Carl Peers caused a Cavalier turnover in the first 30 seconds of the contest. He quickly passed ahead to a streaking Tyler Wason who beat the Walsh keeper for a stunner of a goal.
To prove it was no fluke, the Blue Knights struck again less than 15 minutes later. This time, Wason was stopped by the Cavalier keeper, but the rebound squirted away to the foot of UU freshman forward Jared Brand. Brand easily put the ball into the back of the net as the home team posted a 2-0 advantage that would last into the second half.
Another quick strike at the start of the second half put Urbana up 3-0. A Peers free kick found the head of freshman Michael McFarlane who collided with the Walsh keeper. The ball nearly trickled into the goal, but Wason was there to ensure it found the net for his second goal of the game. Urbana keeper Darragh McGinley finished with six saves in goal to record his second straight shutout.
A year ago, the Cavs shutout the Blue Knights by a score of 4-0. Tuesday's win was Urbana's second of the season and fourth in 12 tries against the Cavs. Next, Urbana travels to the University of Findlay for a 4:30 p.m. match on Friday night.
