Lacrosse Loses Battle with Falcons

URBANA, Ohio (April 26, 2013) - The Urbana University lacrosse team came out of the gates on fire on Friday night, but the Blue Knights couldn't keep up with the deeper Falcons from Notre Dame College. The score was 6-5 at the break, but constant substitutions from the visitors helped the Falcons stay fresh while Urbana was playing without a bench. NDC outscored Urbana 13-3 in the second half, locking down a spot in the post-season GLIAC tournament. Urbana was eliminated from the GLIAC tournament with the 19-8 loss.

The Blue Knights kept it close in the first half thanks to three goals from leading scorer Emily Boerger. It was a 5-5 tie until the 3:57 mark of the first half. From there, NDC went on a 9-1 run that bridged halftime until the 4:18 mark of the second half.

Urbana actually won the battle of draw controls 15-14, but trouble with turnovers cost the home team dearly. Urbana committed 30 turnovers compared to the Falcons' 17. Hannah Walters and Chanelle Bondurant each came up with 6 draw controls for Urbana. Emily Boerger led Urbana with 4 goals on 8 shots. She also tallied 3 ground balls. Ashley Gerken led all Blue Knights with 4 ground balls.

The top highlight of the game came from the Blue Knights. On a pinpoint assist from Hannah Walters, a streaking Alyssa Ashcroft (pictured) caught the pass and fired a shot in a blink of an eye, scoring in the top left corner of the net. Unfortunately for Urbana, that goal came in the midst of NDC's 9-1 run to put the game out of reach.

Urbana's regular season finale is on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. It's Senior Day for Ashcroft and sisters Emily and Nora Boerger. The Blue Knights welcome the GLIAC leaders from Grand Valley State to town. [Box Score]
