UU Golfers Impress at G-MAC Tune-up
FAIRBORN, Ohio (September 25, 2012) - Led by senior Ross O'Neal, the Urbana University men's golf team picked up their first victory of the season, shooting season-low team scores at the Yellow Jacket Invitational. Paced by O'Neal's individual 4th place finish, the Blue Knights took 4th in a field of 5 teams, defeating Cincinnati Christian University by 20 strokes over the 2-day, 36-hole tournament. Three fellow G-MAC squads took first, second and third overall. The Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene won the team championship with a 2-day total of 613. Kentucky Wesleyan finished 2nd with a 622, and the hosts from Cedarville were 3rd with a 639. The Yellow Jacket Invitational was played at the 7,000 yard Greene Country Club in Fairborn, Ohio.
O'Neal continued his impressive final fall season by shooting identical 76's to earn his second straight Top 10 finish. He tied for 4th in the field of 32.
Freshman R.J. Oberle shot 87-83 to finish 2nd on the squad. Steve England matched Oberle's 87 in Round 1, but finished with an 85 on a rainy Day 2 to finish 3rd on the team. Both rounds were personal bests at Urbana for England.
Second-year player Michael Schmidt trimmed 5 strokes off his Day 1 total, following the 89 with an 84. As a team, the Blue Knights cut 11 strokes off their Monday total of 339 by shooting a 328 on Day 2. Freshman Austin Manning also helped the cause by following his Monday score of 91 with an 85 on Tuesday.
Next Sunday and Monday, the Blue Knights will compete in the first of two Regional Tournaments. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside hosts the first Regional at the Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville, Wisconsin. [Yellow Jacket Invitational Results]
