UU Picked to Finish 2nd in GLVC Preseason Poll
INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (July 27, 2012) - The Urbana University football team was picked to finish 2nd in the first Great Lakes Valley Conference pre-season coaches' poll. The poll was released on the GLVC's Twitter feed in countdown fashion on Friday afternoon during the conference's first football kickoff event.
The Blue Knights earned 55 points in the poll, finishing behind unanimous #1 the University of Indianapolis. Indy enters the GLVC for football after competing as an associate member of the GLIAC conference for football over the past several years. The Greyhounds finished 7-4 overall, including a 6-4 mark in the GLIAC, tying for 3rd in the conference's North Division.
Urbana finished the 2011 season with a school record 8 wins. The Blue Knights posted a 4-0 mark against new GLVC opponents St. Joseph's, Missouri S&T, Kentucky Wesleyan and William Jewell. Urbana defeated the 4 opponents by a combined 153-22. The squad returns 16 of its 22 starters on offense and defense, including pre-season All-American Honorable Mention junior QB D.J. Mendenhall, who participated in the GLVC's Football Kickoff event in St. Louis on Friday.
Missouri S&T finished third in the poll, just 3 points behind the Blue Knights. The rest of the poll results are below. Urbana kicks off the 2012 season at home in a non-conference matchup against perennial D-II powerhouse Tusculum College on Saturday, September 1st at noon.
