Geiger, Vogel & Marchesano Highlight All-ICAA Teams

TIFFIN, Ohio (March 12, 2012) – All 5 members of the First team and all 4 individual award winners came from Ohio schools in the 2011-12 All-ICAA Women’s Basketball voting. Urbana led the pack with 4 selections, while Central State and Ursuline had 3 each.

Freshman of the Year was shared by Ciara Geiger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) of Urbana and Martha Nagbe (Lakewood, Ohio) of Notre Dame College. Geiger averaged 15.19 points, 2.65 assists and 1.77 steals a game, hit 38 triples and shot 77.2% from the line. Nagbe averaged 13.2 points, 5.76 rebounds, 2.52 assists and 3.08 steals a game.  In addition to her All-Freshmen Team selection, Geiger also earned First Team All-ICAA honors.

Andrea VogelUrbana's Andrea Vogel (Bluffton, Ind.) gave the Blue Knights two First Team selections.  Vogel was amongst the D-II national leaders in blocked shots all season long.  She finished 1 blocked shot behind the national leader, but she set an Urbana single season record with 102 swats (3.6 bpg).  The junior center also finished first on the team in field goal percentage (47.4%) and second on the squad in scoring (300 pts, 10.7 ppg), and rebounding (7.9 rpg).

Katy BarkleyJoining Geiger on the All-Freshmen Team was fellow frosh Katy Barkley (Olivet, Mich.).  Barkley was 1 of 4 Blue Knights to play in all 29 games this season.  The versatile guard/forward made 23 starts, averaging 8.0 points/game and 5.0 rebounds/game.  Barkley shot a team-high 50.0% from behind the arc, while recording 57 assists and 43 steals on the year.

Coach Maria MarchesanoMaria Marchesano of Urbana was named Coach of the Year. At the time she took over in January, the Blue Knights were 2-8. Urbana finished 12-7 overall under Marchesano, including a 9-1 mark at home that included wins her first 8 games in the Grimes Center.  The rookie head coach also led Urbana to the championship game of the NCAA DII Ohio Independent Tournament.

Player of the Year went to Katie Capello (So./Canton, Ohio) of Ursuline. She averaged 15.62 points, 6.38 rebounds and blocked 1.08 shots a game while shooting 50.5% from the floor.

 

The Independents' Collegiate Athletic Association, or ICAA, is composed of current NCAA Division II Independent institutions.  Basketball members include Black Hills State, Central Oklahoma, Central State, Lindenwood, Notre Dame College, Palm Beach Atlantic, Urbana, Ursuline and Washington Adventist.
