Geiger, Johnson Highlight All-OIC Selections

CEDARVILLE, Ohio (March 8, 2012) - An amazing turnaround, capped by a run to the Ohio Independents' Championship game, netted the Urbana University women's basketball team a pair of All-OIC selections today.  Ciara Geiger put the finishing touches on one of the most successful rookie seasons in Urbana history with a First Team All-OIC nod and Freshman of the Year honors.  Her backcourt mate, sophomore DeVonyea Johnson, picked up Second Team All-OIC honors.  Both Geiger and Johnson were also named to the All-OIC Tournament team last Saturday.  

Geiger was the only Blue Knight to start all 29 games for the 14-15 Blue Knights.  She reached double digits in all but 5 games, averaging a team-high 15.3 points per game.  Her 31 points against Washington Adventist were the most at UU since 2004.  Geiger also had a team and season-high 10 assists vs. Ursuline, tying the 6th highest single game mark in UU history.  In addition to leading the Blue Knights in scoring, Geiger also led the team in minutes (999), free throw percentage (74.3%), steals (1.9 spg), 3-point field goals made (42), free throws made and attempted, field goals made and attempted, and she finished 2nd on the squad in assists (2.5 apg) and field goal percentage (44.7%).

Johnson came back from an early injury to lead the Blue Knights' turnaround.  After a 2-8 start, Urbana ended the year 12-7 behind a healthy Johnson and new Head Coach Maria Marchesano.  Johnson reached double digit scoring in 13 of the final 14 games of the season.  She poured in a career-high 22 in an OIC first round win over sixth-seeded Walsh University.  Four times, the team co-captain eclipsed 20 points down the stretch.  She finished second on the squad in points per game (11.0), three-point field goals (41), 3-point percentage (36.3%), free throws made, and steals per game (1.7).  She led the Blue Knights in assists (3.3 apg).
