Wingate Named New Women's Basketball Head Coach

Today, Urbana University Athletic Director Doug Young announced the hiring of Danny Wingate as the new Blue Knight head women’s basketball coach

“We are excited to bring Danny’s leadership into our women’s basketball program,” said Young upon the announcement. “He brings a wealth of experience, and he has proven over time that he has the ability to win at the collegiate level. Geiger Garners All-Midwest Region Honors

On Saturday afternoon, the Urbana University women’s basketball team concluded its season with a conference championship. The Blue Knights defeated Trevecca Nazarene University 70-63 for the G-MAC title, Urbana’s first basketball conference championship in 14 years. Today, one of the victors got her spoils.

Sophomore Ciara Geiger (Ft. Wayne, IN/Carroll HS) became the first Blue Knight women’s basketball player to earn NCAA Division II Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region honors. Geiger was named to the Second Team in one of the toughest regions in the country, joining Blue Knight soccer standouts Tyler Wason and Abby Pearson as Urbana’s other All-Midwest Region honorees this school year. Blue Knights Bring Home G-MAC Championship

Playing for a conference championship for the first time in five seasons, the Urbana University women's basketball team entered this weekend's inaugural G-MAC Tournament with championship intentions. As an added incentive, Urbana hoped to avenge a three-point loss to their opponent in the championship game, Trevecca Nazarene University.

Two weeks ago in Nashville, the TNU Trojans held off a late charge from the Blue Knights to capture the first regular season G-MAC title. With that win, TNU also earned the right to host this weekend's conference tournament as the top seed. Unfortunately for the Trojans, the home court advantage didn't help on Saturday afternoon as the second-seeded Blue Knights traveled to Nashville and brought home the hardware after a 70-63 victory in the G-MAC Championship. Ciara Geiger led all scorers with 20 points in the win. The sophomore guard fell just 30 points shy of Urbana's all-time single season scoring mark. Urbana Advances to G-MAC Championship

After missing out on a regular season G-MAC title by just three points in the final game of the regular season, the Urbana University women's basketball team returned to the scene of the heartbreaking loss and began working towards a conference tournament championship on Friday night. The second-seeded Blue Knights defeated third-seeded Cedarville University 74-71 in thrilling fashion in the first semifinal game hosted by top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University.

The win over the long-time rival Yellow Jackets was the first step towards total redemption for the Blue Knights. Urbana took two of three against Cedarville one year after the Yellow Jackets took two of three from Urbana, including a win in the season-ending D-II Ohio Independents' Championship last March. Now, the Blue Knights have their sights set on top-seeded TNU. The Trojans denied Urbana a regular season conference title in Nashville two weeks ago in the regular season finale. On Saturday afternoon, the two teams will face off for a third time in a span of five weeks with the G-MAC hardware on the line. Geiger Joined by 3 Blue Knights on All-Conference Teams

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference presented its 2012-13 Women’s Basketball honors and awards on Friday during the inaugural G-MAC Basketball Championships. Between the semifinal games at Trevecca Nazarene University, the selected student-athletes were recognized.

Urbana's Ciara Geiger was named Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference. Kennedy Boggs was Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention, and Kate Francisco and DeVonyea Johnson took home Second Team honors. Read More

Top Seed Slips Away at TNU

On the final day of the regular season, the Urbana University women's basketball team saw their chances to secure a regular season G-MAC title and the top seed in the conference tournament slip away early on Saturday afternoon at Trevecca Nazarene University. The Trojans defended their home court with a 75-72 victory over the Blue Knights, earning the regular season title, a top seed and the right to host the conference tournament in March. Falcons' 10th Straight Win Snaps UU's Streak

The Urbana University women’s basketball team entered Tuesday night’s home finale on a five-game winning streak. Unfortunately, Urbana ran into a hotter flock of Falcons from Notre Dame College. The Blue Knights’ future Mountain East Conference foe ran their winning streak to double digits with a 63-54 road win over Urbana. The Falcons also dealt the Blue Knights their last loss, a 69-62 defeat in South Euclid on January 26th. In defeat, the Blue Knights were led by four players in double figures. Saffold Named G-MAC Player of the Week

Jessica Saffold has been named the G-MAC Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week for the first time this year, and is the only other player from Urbana besides Ciara Geiger (five time winner) to earn the weekly honor. Urbana was a perfect 2-0 on the week, both conference wins, improving to 6-1 on the season in the G-MAC and setting up a season-finale against 6-1 Trevecca Nazarene for the right to host the Conference Championship Tournament and the top seed. In the team’s first game of the week on the road at Cedarville, Saffold recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Saffold followed up the solid performance with five points and a game-high 14 rebounds in a two-point victory over Central State at home on her Senior Night. Vogel Scores 1,000th Point in Thrilling Senior Day Win

After manning the starting center position for four standout seasons, Urbana University senior Andrea Vogel became just the 11th Blue Knight in the program’s 38-year history to reach 1,000 career points in a thrilling Senior Day victory over visiting Central State University on Saturday afternoon. UU Avenges Earlier Loss to Cedarville, Takes Control of G-MAC

The Urbana University women's basketball team avenged their only conference loss on Tuesday night at Cedarville University. The Blue Knights went on the road to pick up a key 66-48 G-MAC win over the Yellow Jackets. Cedarville dealt Urbana its only conference loss, a 77-74 defeat in the Grimes Center a month ago. Urbana improves to 5-1 in conference play with Tuesday night's victory. The Blue Knights remain on the heels of G-MAC leader Trevecca Nazarene University (6-1), but Urbana currently owns the tiebreaker with TNU, having defeated the Trojans 71-59 at UU on February 2nd. Urbana improved to 4-1 in the G-MAC by nearly doubling up the winless Arrows, 95-48. Senior Jessica Saffold recorded her first double-double of the season after registering a team-high six double-doubles as a junior. For the first time in nearly a decade, the Urbana University women's basketball team topped triple digits in a win on Monday night. The Blue Knights beat the Lady Bulldogs from nearby Wilberforce University 102-79 in a non-conference matchup. The last time the Blue Knights reached triple digits was on November 6, 2004. Urbana beat Taylor-Ft. Wayne 103-86 in that contest. Monday's scoring outburst snapped a streak of 249 games without reaching the century mark. Leading by three with the ball and just six seconds to play, the Blue Knights turned it over to Fairmont State University. After a tough three-point conference loss at home on Saturday afternoon, the Urbana University women's basketball team got back on track on Wednesday night on the road at Central State University. The Battlers from Alderson-Broaddus College used a late 8-0 run to turn a 3-point lead into an 11-point advantage in a 74-67 victory over Urbana. The loss was Urbana's fifth straight, and it was the team's fifth defeat away from home on the young season. On the second day of Ashland University’s Holiday Inn Classic, NMU scored the final eight points in a 71-61 win over the Blue Knights. rbana University freshman guard Kennedy Boggs sparked a second half Blue Knight rally against visiting Ohio Dominican University on Saturday afternoon, but her game-winning attempt at the buzzer rimmed out in Urbana’s 66-65 home opening loss. The Blue Knights trailed ODU most of the afternoon. The Panther lead grew to as many as 11 in the first half, but the Blue Knights kept whittling away at the deficit until Urbana took a 40-38 lead on a Boggs steal and Andrea Vogel lay-in with 15 minutes to go.
