UU Shutout by Cedarville on Senior Day
URBANA, Ohio (May 5, 2012) - On Graduation Saturday, the Cedarville University baseball team swept a unique Senior Day doubleheader with Urbana University. First, the Yellow Jackets won their regular season finale in Cedarville 4-0, after both teams made the short trek north to Blue Knight Field for Game 2, the Yellow Jackets completed the sweep with a 6-0 win.
Urbana's 4-0 loss in Game 1 ended their chances at an outright D-II Ohio Independent Championship. Cedarville pitchers Michael Roe and Sean Larkin shut down the Urbana offense. Roe threw 4 innings of 1-hit baseball to improve to 8-0 on the year, while Larkin closed out the final 3 innings by holding the Blue Knights to just 3 hits.
Sophomore Kyle England had 2 of UU's 3 hits. Senior Zane Bayliss went the distance in his collegiate finale for the Blue Knights. After a first inning 3-run home run by Nate Davenport, Bayliss held the Yellow Jackets to just 6 hits while striking out 5.
Like Game 1, Cedarville struck early in Game 2. With runners in scoring position in the second inning, Cam McWilliams drove in 2 with a single to center. Cedarville starter Steve Cardwell shut down the Blue Knights' bats over the first 4 innings. In the top of the fifth, Davenport broke the game open with a no-doubter to left. The home run was his second of the day and eighth of the season. The Yellow Jackets tacked on another run in the inning on a sac fly. An unearned run scored in the top of the sixth as the visitors held on for the 6-0 win.
Urbana senior Matt Mays finished 2 for 2 in his final collegiate game to come from behind to win the team batting title. Mays edged a group of teammates with a .314 average. He ended his career ranked 6th all-time at UU with a .364 average. Senior ace Julius Storey took the loss on the mound in his last collegiate start. He finished his career ranked in the top 10 all-time at Urbana in winning percentage and ERA.
Urbana ends its season with a 21-26 overall record, including an even 8-8 mark in the OIC. The Blue Knights improved their win total by 7 over last season. With at least one game remaining, Cedarville sits at 34-10 overall. The sweep helped Cedarville leapfrog Urbana in the OIC standings by moving to 9-6. [Game 1 Box Score][Game 2 Box Score]
