Ryan Receives a Pair of First Team All-Region Nods (Update)

Urbana University senior Drew Ryan became the Blue Knight baseball program’s first NCAA Division II All-Midwest Region honoree today. The three-year starter was named to both the ABCA/Rawlings and the Daktronics First Teams, earning nominations for both organization's D-II All-American Teams in the process. The teams are voted upon by the head coaches and SID's in the region. After another round of voting, the organizations will release their 2013 All-American teams later this month.

Ryan hit .401 this season, becoming the 19th Blue Knight in the program’s 47-year history to turn in a batting average over .400 for an entire season. Remarkably, he led the team in both runs scored (45) and RBIs (34), an impressive feat hitting in the leadoff spot. Read More

Top-Seeded Trojans End Urbana's Season

The Urbana University baseball team had top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University on the ropes on the Trojans’ home field in Nashville on Tuesday afternoon, but the Blue Knights couldn’t seal the deal in a 6-5 defeat. The loss eliminates Urbana from the G-MAC Tournament, ending the Blue Knights’ season at 22-19 overall.

All-Conference shortstop Cody Ridinger finished 3 for 5 with a double and 2 runs in the loss. Urbana’s 2013 season is officially in the books. The Blue Knights turned in the first winning season since 2009. It’s the fourth 20-win season in six seasons under Head Coach Mike Goldschmidt. Read More

Tavone Jr. Tops List of 5 Blue Knights on All-Conference Team

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference presented its Baseball All-Conference Team and Individual Awards on Monday prior to the first-ever G-MAC Baseball Championships. The Baseball Championship tournament started Monday in Nashville. The tournament was hosted by top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University.

Third-seeded Urbana University landed 5 players on the All-Conference squad, including the Offensive Player of the Year, junior catcher Robert Tavone Jr. (Whitby, Ontario, Canada). He was joined by teammates Cody Ridinger, Drew Ryan, Tom Piatt, and Joemar Melendez on the All-Conference Team. Read More

Baseball Drops Opener of G-MAC Tourney

Cedarville University snapped Urbana's season-long 6-game winning streak in the opening game of the G-MAC Tournament on Monday afternoon. Second-seeded Cedarville didn't allow a hit by the third-seeded Blue Knights until the 8th inning of an 8-1 victory. The Yellow Jackets advance to play their hosts, top-seeded Trevecca Nazarene University, while Urbana awaits the loser of that contest in the next round.

Urbana entered Monday's contest having outscored their opponents 43-19 in the last six. That win streak included an impressive 6-4 win over D-I Wright State, but that didn't help the Blue Knights on Monday as the team suffered a defeat at the same site of their last loss, suffered 16 days ago to Trevecca Nazarene. Down 6-0 in the eighth inning, Urbana finally pushed a run across the plate. All-Conference shortstop Cody Ridinger led off the inning with a double. Ridinger had 2 of UU's 4 hits on the afternoon. Baseball Sweeps Trailblazers on Senior Day

Under the Friday afternoon sunshine at Blue Knight Field, the Urbana University baseball team swept visiting Ohio Christian University 2-1 and 5-3 on Senior Day. The wins bump the Blue Knights' season-high winning streak to six entering next week's conference tournament. The sweep also clinches the Blue Knights' (22-17) winning season since 2009.

The Trailblazers struck first in Game 1 on an Urbana error in the top of the third, but senior Drew Ryan's two-run homer in the bottom of the inning delivered the home team its first lead of the day. Ryan's shot was his fourth of the season, and it proved to be the difference. Read More

Urbana Scores Major Upset over D-I Wright State

The Urbana University baseball team scored a signature victory over Division I Wright State University on Wednesday night. Urbana entered the contest 0-5 all-time against the Raiders, but by the end of the night, the Blue Knights could boast one of the biggest wins in program history, a 6-4 victory under the lights at Nischwitz Stadium.

The win is Urbana's third over a D-I opponent during the Mike Goldschmidt era. Goldschmidt guided the Blue Knights to wins at the University of Dayton in 2008 and Chicago State University in 2009. Urbana has been close to knocking off the Raiders in their two previous meetings. Last season, Wright State held off their D-II opponents 6-4 and two seasons ago, Urbana fell just 3 runs short.

A huge sixth inning on Wednesday night ensured Urbana wouldn't fall short again. The visitors racked up 6 runs in the decisive inning. Urbana starter Tom Piatt cruised through the first five inning, allowing just two hits. Read More

Baseball Senior Day Set for Friday, May 3rd

The Urbana University baseball team will host its Senior Day on Friday against Ohio Christian University. Originally, the teams were scheduled to play a single 9-inning game starting at 4:00 p.m. That has been changed to two 7-inning games beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Senior Day ceremony will take place between games at approximately 4:30 p.m. There are no games on Saturday. Liming Named G-MAC Player of the Week

Urbana University's Greg Liming was named G-MAC Men’s Baseball Offensive Athlete of the Week for the first time this season. This week’s honor gives Urbana its fourth different Baseball Athlete of the Week this season, including two Offensive Athletes of the Week (Robert Tavone Jr. and Liming) and two Pitchers of the Week (Justin Robinson & Tom Piatt).

Liming hit .600 last week and totaled a slugging percentage of 1.400 to lead the conference. He had a G-MAC-high nine runs scored, seven runs batted in, and two home runs, despite registering only 10 at-bats in the 3 games.. He also walked six times, totaled 14 bases, and added two doubles. His two home runs gives him the regular-season G-MAC home run title with seven on the season. Read More

Baseball's Senior Day Rained Out on Sunday

The Blue Knight baseball team will have to reschedule its Senior Day after rain forced the cancellation of Sunday's home doubleheader with Notre Dame College. The games with NDC will not be made up. Currently, the Blue Knights have 2 games remaining on their regular season schedule: at D-I Wright State University on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. and home against Ohio Christian University on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Next Saturday is also possibility for the rescheduled Senior Day if the Blue Knights can secure an opponent.

Also today, the G-MAC released more details about the 2013 Championship Tournament. Trevecca Nazarene University earned the top seed by knocking off Cedarville earlier this week, so the Trojans will host the 3-team tournament from Monday, May 6th to Wednesday, May 8th. As the #3 seed, Urbana meets #2 seed Cedarville in the tournament's first game on Monday, May 6th at 12:00 p.m. Central Time. Read More

Baseball Makes Changes to Remaining Schedule

As the 2013 season winds down, the Blue Knight baseball team has made several changes to the remaining regular season schedule. First, tonight's doubleheader at Wright State University-Lake has been reduced to a single 9-inning game beginning at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's home games against Miami University-Hamilton will now be a JV game only. Start time is 1:00 p.m. The third and final change at this time is the cancellation of a home doubleheader against the University of Cincinnati-Clermont on Sunday, May 5th.

There are no changes to the home doubleheader vs. Notre Dame College on Sunday, the game at Wright State University on May 1st, or the home game vs. Ohio Christian University on May 3rd. Sunday's doubleheader with NDC will still be Senior Day for the Blue Knights. Baseball Finds a Way to Win at Findlay

Trailing 5-0 after the first two innings of action on the road at the University of Findlay on Tuesday night, the Blue Knight baseball team found a way to rally for a 7-6 victory. The win gives Urbana a season sweep of their Route 68 rivals. It also evens the Blue Knights' record at 17-17 on the year. Findlay slips to 17-19 with the loss.

Reliever Jeff Beall came in after ace Tom Piatt last just an inning and a third. Beall scattered 5 hits and just 1 run over the next 6.2 innings to keep the Oilers in check to earn the win. Beall struck out 6 in the longest relief outing of his career. Read More

One day after splitting a Friday night doubleheader with the Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University, the Urbana University baseball team dropped a pair of decisions by scores of 11-0 and 10-7 at TNU to lose the weekend series 3-1. Baseball Splits Series Opener at TNU on Friday Night

The Blue Knights and Trojans opened a 4-game weekend series with a doubleheader split on Friday night under the lights at TNU's Jackson Field. Urbana took the first game 8-6 on a sixth inning 2-run home run by junior Aaron Bingham, but the Trojans recovered to take the night cap 9-6.

Urbana's lead expanded to 6-1 after a 3-run fifth inning, but the Trojans answered with 5 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 6 runs apiece. However, Bingham and the Blue Knights did not wilt after watching their 5-run lead evaporate in the fifth. After a leadoff single by catcher Robert Tavone Jr., Bingham sent a Trojan offering over the 25-foot fence in left field. The ball traveled an estimated 400 feet and proved to be the game-winner. Tavone Jr. Named G-MAC Player of the Week

Robert Tavone Jr. was named G-MAC Men’s Baseball Offensive Athlete of the Week for the first time this season. In just one game this past week, Tavone Jr. went 3-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. His slugging percentage of 1.667 led the conference, while in just one game he led or tied for the lead in the G-MAC with three hits, two doubles, and five total bases.

Tavone Jr. is seventh in the conference with a .352 batting average, while leading the G-MAC with 15 doubles and a .612 slugging percentage. He is tied for fifth with two home runs, ninth with 19 runs batted in, fourth with 52 total bases, and seventh with 12 bases on balls. Read More

Baseball Stung Twice on Monday

The G-MAC baseball race got a little clearer after a make-up Monday doubleheader at Urbana University. The visiting Yellow Jackets from Cedarville University swept the Blue Knights 11-3 and 16-11 to take a commanding 5-1 lead in 6 games against Urbana this season. The Blue Knights slip to 4-6 in the G-MAC, while Cedarville surges into the conference lead at 5-3.

Urbana appeared to be the team to beat at the start of Game 1. In front of about 25 pro scouts on hand to watch Cedarville ace David Ledbetter amongst others, Blue Knight leadoff hitter Drew Ryan sent the second pitch of the ball game, a 93 mph offering, over the left field fence. Read More

Late-week rainstorms have forced some changes to this weekend's 4-game series between the Blue Knight baseball team and Cedarville University. Friday afternoon's doubleheader has been postponed to Monday at 12:00 p.m. at Urbana, and Saturday's doubleheader has been postponed to a later date, yet to be determined. An 8-run first inning nearly ended Tuesday afternoon's contest before it began. The Wayne State Warriors batted around and clubbed 3 home runs, including a grand slam, in their first at-bat to coast to a 19-8 victory at Blue Knight Field. Baseball Splits with TNU on Saturday to Stay Atop G-MAC

After dropping the first game of a Saturday doubleheader 8-1, the Urbana University baseball team bounced back to take the night cap 10-9 over the visiting Trojans from Trevecca Nazarene University. The Saturday split gave the Blue Knights the series win after posting a pair of 7-6 victories over TNU on Friday night.

After the weekend's 4-game set, the teams remained tied atop the conference standings. Urbana is 15-11 overall and 4-4 in the G-MAC. Trevecca sits at 19-15 overall and 3-3 in the conference. The Urbana University baseball team turned a 3-game in-conference losing streak into a 2-game winning streak on Friday night at home. The Blue Knights took down the G-MAC leaders from Trevecca Nazarene University twice in a pair of tight 7-6 games to turn a 2-game deficit into a three-way tie atop the conference standings.

Urbana improves to 14-10 overall and 3-3 in the G-MAC with the Friday sweep. The Trojans, meanwhile, slip to 18-14 overall and 2-2 in the G-MAC. In a make-up conference game lost to weather two weeks ago, the Urbana University baseball team fell 14-6 on the road at Cedarville University on Wednesday night. The Great Midwest Athletic Conference has announced that Thomas Piatt of Urbana University and Jordan Foreman of Trevecca Nazarene University have been named G-MAC Baseball Pitching and Offensive Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Piatt picked up Urbana’s only conference win of the weekend in a complete game shutout of Cedarville University, 6-0. His win was the first conference win in league history, the first complete game, the first shutout, and established a conference-high with nine innings pitched and 12 strikeouts. Read More

Urbana University senior starting pitcher Tom Piatt made a statement in the Blue Knights' Great Midwest Athletic Conference opener on Friday night. In near-freezing conditions, Urbana's right-handed ace went the distance on the road in a 6-0 shutout of rival Cedarville University.

Piatt (4-1) scattered three hits and three walks over nine innings, striking out 12 Yellow Jackets to earn the most impressive win of his four-year career. Read More

#8 Indy Upends Urbana 13-7

Playing in near freezing temperatures, the Blue Knight baseball team could only muster 8 hits against the 8th ranked Greyhounds from the University of Indianapolis on Tuesday afternoon. Indy scored in each of the first four innings to post a 13-7 win over visiting Urbana. The game-time temperature was 38 degrees, with a wind chill hovering in the upper-20's. The cold didn't seem to phase the nationally ranked Greyhounds who pounded out 13 hits and held a 6-1 lead after four innings. Urbana briefly tied the game at 1-1 in the second after Aaron Bingham reached on walk, stole second and scored on an Indy error. Blue Knights Settle for Split on Saturday

After a home opening 15-12 loss to the visiting Tigers from Salem International University on Friday night, the Urbana University baseball team regrouped and took the next game in the series on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Knights won 3-2 on a walk-off bases loaded 2-run single by Drew Ryan, but the Tigers bounced back to take the rubber game 6-4 after scoring the go-ahead runs in the final inning.

Urbana's Drew Ryan continued his torrid pace to start the season. In addition to the game-winning hit in Game 1, the junior third baseman scored Urbana's first run after a lead-off double in the bottom of the first. He finished 3 for 4 with a run and two RBIs. Tigers Take 1st Game of Weekend Series

The visiting Tigers from Salem International University took advantage of a huge first inning to top the Blue Knight baseball team 15-12 on Friday night at Urbana University. The Tigers touched up Urbana starter Billy Kosachook for six runs in the top of the first inning. The lead was 12-1 after two and a half innings.

Urbana outhit the Tigers 16-12. Blue Knights Robert Tavone Jr., Greg Liming, Jose Vargas, Colt Turley and Drew Ryan all homered in the contest. Ryan's blast was a 2-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth, but it was too little, too late in the home opening loss. These same two teams will try to play two more on Saturday afternoon. Baseball Home Opener Moved up to Friday at 4PM

The Urbana University baseball team announced today that this weekend's series against Salem International University has been moved up one day in an attempt to beat the forecasted rain. The Blue Knights and Tigers will now kick things off on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Blue Knight Field. The teams will play one 9-inning game on Friday night. The rest of the weekend's games are in danger of being washed out, but as of now, the two squads will still attempt to play games on Saturday and Sunday with starting times at 1:00 p.m. on both days. Robinson Named G-MAC Pitcher of the Week

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference has announced that Jordan Foreman of Trevecca Nazarene University and Justin Robinson of Urbana University have been named G-MAC Baseball Offensive Athlete and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Justin Robinson helped guide the Urbana baseball team to a 4-2 week, improving to 7-3 overall. For Robinson, he threw 10 innings over two games last week without allowing a run. Read More

Wednesday's Baseball Home Opener Postponed

The 2013 Blue Knight baseball home opener has been postponed due to inclement weather. Urbana was prepared to host regional rival Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., but soggy fields and forecasts of snow and temperatures in the low 30's have caused the postponement of Wednesday's 9-inning affair. The teams will try to find a date in April to make-up the game, but for now, Urbana's home opener has been moved to Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Salem International University. The Blue Knights and Tigers are set to play a 4-game series with 1:00 p.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. After struggling in their Spring Break opener, the Urbana University baseball team bounced back with back-to-back dominant pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep on Monday afternoon. Behind newcomers Billy Kosachook and Justin Robinson, the Blue Knights beat the Cardinals from Saginaw Valley State University 5-2 and 1-0 at the NCAA D-II Winning Innings Invitational in Clearwater, Florida. In Game 2, Urbana starter Justin Robinson managed to one-up Kosachook's Game 1 dominance. The junior southpaw threw a complete game shutout, striking out 8 Cardinals along the way. A two-run walk-off home run was the only thing that stood between the Urbana University baseball team and a perfect 4-0 start during the team's opening weekend on the road in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Knights swept a twinbill, 9-2 and 5-2, against their future conference foes from West Liberty University on Saturday, but the Hilltoppers prevented the four-game sweep with the aforementioned walk-off home run in an 8-7 win in the first game on Sunday. Urbana bounced back to take the series with a 7-3 victory in the final game of the series on a neutral field at Louisville Male High School. UU Shutout by Cedarville on Senior Day

On Graduation Saturday, the Cedarville University baseball team swept a unique Senior Day doubleheader with Urbana University. First, the Yellow Jackets won their regular season finale in Cedarville 4-0, after both teams made the short trek north to Blue Knight Field for Game 2, the Yellow Jackets completed the sweep with a 6-0 win. Senior Matt Mays finished 2 for 2 in his final collegiate game to come from behind to win the team batting title. Mays edged a group of teammates with a .314 average. The Urbana University baseball team kept its regular season D-II Ohio Independent Championship hopes alive with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Notre Dame College on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Knights took both games by a score of 12-5, completing the 4-game season sweep of the Falcons.

Urbana improves to 21-24 overall and 8-6 against OIC opponents with the sweep. In order to claim the regular season OIC crown, the Blue Knights need to sweep Cedarville on Saturday and receive some help in the Walsh/Malone season-ending series. The Urbana University baseball team briefly led nationally ranked D-I Wright State University 2-1 on the road on Wednesday night, but the Blue Knights couldn't hold on to the lead as the rain began to fall. The Raiders, who have received votes in each of the last 3 NCAA Division I national rankings, inched ahead of Urbana by a score of 6-3 just before the rain became heavy enough to call the game after 5 1/2 innings of play. The Blue Knight baseball team braved 40 mph winds and temperatures in the 40's on Monday afternoon to finish the season sweep of Wright State University-Lake Campus. UU Edges Malone Late, Salvages Split

After nearly 3 hours of rain delays and a 9-1 loss in Game 1, the Urbana University baseball team finally upended Malone 3-2 in the series finale on Saturday night. Malone stole a doubleheader at Urbana on Thursday, and the Pioneers nearly pulled off the 4-game sweep, but the Blue Knights braved the near-freezing temperatures and setting sun to earn their first win against the Pioneers in the final game of the 4-game series. Pioneers Take Two from UU

A late rally helped visiting Malone University steal Game 2 of a doubleheader at Blue Knight Field on Thursday afternoon. Malone made a first inning 3-run home run by Bob Suitca stand in a 7-1 Game 1 win, and the Pioneers pulled off a 6-3 comeback win in Game 2 by erasing a 3-0 deficit in the final inning. The Blue Knights took three decisions from visiting Kentucky State University thanks to a make-up date victory, followed by a regularly scheduled doublheader sweep. A little luck and clutch hitting helped the Blue Knights pull off an improbable 8-7 win in extra innings of Game 2. The teams split the 4-game season series thanks to a pair of one-run Walsh wins in Canton on Thursday. UU Beats Big Blue, But Darkness Suspends Game 2

The Blue Knight baseball team picked up a win and a half on Thursday night at Kentucky State University. First, Urbana knocked off Bluefield State College on a neutral field 5-2. Then, in Game 2, Urbana led the home Thorobreds 6-4 in the 4th inning before darkness forced the suspension of the game. The bottom of the 4th began with UU on top 6-0, but the Thorobreds raced back with 4 runs in the inning before the game had to be called. The Urbana University baseball team announced two schedule updates this afternoon. First, a make-up date has been decided upon for the Kentucky State University postponement. The February 25th doubleheader could not be played due to inclement weather. The teams will meet this Thursday, March 22 at 4:00 p.m. in Frankfort, Kentucky for one 9-inning game. UU will play Bluefield State University before that game at 1:30 p.m. on KSU's home field. Also, the 9-inning game scheduled for Wednesday, March 28th at the University of Indianapolis has been moved back a day to Thursday, March 29th.
