113 Named to A.D.'s Fall Honor Roll
URBANA, Ohio (January 30, 2014) - A total of 113 Urbana University student-athletes maintained a GPA of 3.25 or higher and enrolled in at least 12 credit hours in the 2013 Fall Term, earning a spot on the Athletic Director's Fall Honor Roll.
The top academic squads in the fall were the men’s swimming team (3.79 GPA) and women’s cross country team (3.82). It's is the third consecutive term on top for both of those squads. The GPA of the men's swim team has never been topped by another men's team at UU, and only twice before (by the women's cross country team this semester and last spring with an all-time high team GPA of 3.85), has a women's team topped their 3.79 cumulative GPA.
In the fall of 2012, Urbana University student-athletes posted the most successful academic semester since records were kept. A school-record 121 student-athletes made the Athletic Director’s Fall Honor Roll. Never before had more than 100 Blue Knights landed on the Honor Roll. Now, after the most recent fall semester, the Blue Knights can boast back-to-back-to-back triple digit numbers on the AD's Honor Roll.
The Blue Knight football team had the most representatives on the Honor Roll with 24 for the second straight semester. The softball team had the most representatives on the women’s side with 10. The 113 total members were made up of 68 men and 45 women.
In overall cumulative GPA, the Blue Knight women topped the Blue Knight men 3.15 to 2.65. As a whole, the student-athlete populous posted a 2.80 GPA, which is just below the Athletic Department record of 2.87, set last spring. The goal of attaining an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 amongst student-athletes is still within reach.
Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Jim Judge Jr. is a big reason for the recent upward trend in student-athlete GPA’s at Urbana University. Dr. Judge is the link between the UU faculty and coaches. He helped devise a system that allows for consistent communication between these two parties. His relentless pursuit of feedback provides coaches with a constant stream of information about their student-athletes’ performance in the classroom. Coaches are using this information to ensure their student-athletes are attending class and keeping their grades up. Dr. Judge is in his 6th year as FAR at Urbana University.
As a result of all of the hard work by Dr. Judge, the Blue Knight coaches and the student-athletes, an incredible 28 Blue Knights posted perfect 4.0 grade point averages this past fall (17 men, 11 women). That ties the school record set in the fall of 2012. The football team led the way with 6 perfect 4.0's, including the school's first ever NCAA Division II First Team Academic American (Kyle Wallace). The softball team led the women's side with 3 student-athletes with perfect 4.0 GPA's.
