UU Golf Scramble Set for July 19th
Jun. 18th, 2013The Urbana University Athletic Department is hosting its annual Blue Knight Golf Scramble on Friday, July 19th. The event will be held at the Woodland Golf Club in Cable, Ohio. Registration for the event begins at 9:00 a.m. Golfers will tee off at 10:00 a.m. in a shotgun start. Proceeds for the event will benefit the Urbana University Athletic Department. The registration fee is $100 per golfer or $360 per foursome. The registration fee covers greens fees for 18 holes with a cart and lunch at the turn provided by Rudy's Smokehouse. 115 Named to AD's Spring Honor Roll
May. 16th, 2013In the fall, Urbana University student-athletes posted the most successful academic semester since records were kept. A school-record 121 student-athletes made the Athletic Director’s Fall Honor Roll. Never before had more than 100 Blue Knights landed on the Honor Roll. Now, after the spring semester, the Blue Knights can boast back-to-back triple digit numbers on the AD's Honor Roll.
A total of 115 student-athletes maintained a GPA of 3.25 or higher and enrolled in at least 12 credit hours in the spring to earn this distinction. The top academic squads in the fall were the men’s swimming team (3.2 GPA) and women’s cross country team (3.67). Both teams repeated their feat in the spring, and both squads improved upon their cumulative GPA. The men's swim team posted an impressive 3.33 team GPA, while the women's cross country team nearly pulled off perfection at 3.85. Read More
Wingate Named New Women's Basketball Head Coach
May. 7th, 2013Today, Urbana University Athletic Director Doug Young announced the hiring of Danny Wingate as the new Blue Knight head women’s basketball coach
“We are excited to bring Danny’s leadership into our women’s basketball program,” said Young upon the announcement. “He brings a wealth of experience, and he has proven over time that he has the ability to win at the collegiate level. We see nothing but great things for the future of our women’s basketball program under Danny’s leadership.” Read More
Urbana Scores Major Upset over D-I Wright State
May. 1st, 2013The Urbana University baseball team scored a signature victory over Division I Wright State University on Wednesday night. Urbana entered the contest 0-5 all-time against the Raiders, but by the end of the night, the Blue Knights could boast one of the biggest wins in program history, a 6-4 victory under the lights at Nischwitz Stadium.
The win is Urbana's third over a D-I opponent during the Mike Goldschmidt era. Goldschmidt guided the Blue Knights to wins at the University of Dayton in 2008 and Chicago State University in 2009. Urbana has been close to knocking off the Raiders in their two previous meetings. Last season, Wright State held off their D-II opponents 6-4 and two seasons ago, Urbana fell just 3 runs short.
A huge sixth inning on Wednesday night ensured Urbana wouldn't fall short again. The visitors racked up 6 runs in the decisive inning. Urbana starter Tom Piatt cruised through the first five inning, allowing just two hits. Read More
Geiger, Mendenhall Named 2013 Blue Knights of the Year at Athletic Banquet
Apr. 29th, 2013Urbana University held its 3rd annual All-Sports Awards Banquet on Saturday night in the Warren G. Grimes Gymnasium. Each of the University's 15 intercollegiate athletic programs recognized outstanding performances from the 2012-13 school year, and at the end of the night, the athletic department handed out its most prestigious awards to junior quarterback D.J. Mendenhall and sophomore women's basketball player Ciara Geiger.
Olympic gold medalist Matt Vogel (pictured) was the featured speaker at the banquet. Vogel won two gold medals at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics. Vogel shared some of his Olympic experiences with the Blue Knights. He also shared friendly advice on how to carry successes from the collegiate playing field out into the real world. Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Vogel to Speak at All-Sports Athletic Banquet
Apr. 17th, 2013The Urbana University Athletic Department will host its 3rd annual all-sports athletic awards banquet on Saturday, April 27th. The athletic department, including student-athletes and coaches from all 15 Blue Knight athletic teams, will gather on the same night to honor Urbana University's top student-athletes during the 2012-13 school year. The banquet will be held in the Warren G. Grimes Center Gymnasium this year. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m., and the awards presentation will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Matt Vogel will be the featured speaker at the event. Vogel competed in the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics for Team USA. The Ft. Wayne, Indiana native won gold in the 100-meter butterfly. He also swam a leg on the team’s 4x100 medley relay team that set a new world record and captured another gold medal for Vogel. Read More
NCAA Adds Mountain East Conference as Newest Division II League
Feb. 15th, 2013The Mountain East Conference (MEC) announced today that its application for membership has been approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. The MEC will officially become the 25th NCAA Division II conference on Sept. 1, 2013 and immediately assumes active status.

Mountain East Conference Files with NCAA
Dec. 4th, 2012The 12 institutions that announced the formation of the Mountain East Conference in August have officially applied for approval to begin competing as the NCAA’s newest Division II conference in 2013-14. Pending approval from the NCAA, the new league’s charter members include: Concord University (W.Va.), Fairmont State University (W.Va.), Glenville State College (W.Va.), Notre Dame College (Ohio), Shepherd University (W.Va.), The University of Charleston (W.Va.), The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (Va.), Urbana University (Ohio), West Liberty University (W.Va.), West Virginia State University (W.Va.), Wheeling Jesuit University (W.Va.), and West Virginia Wesleyan College (W.Va.). Support the Blue Knight Walk of Honor
Nov. 1st, 2012This fall, the Urbana University Athletic Department announced a new fundraising opportunity to support two major facility upgrades. The Athletic Department invites you to help pave a new "Walk of Honor" by purchasing an engraved paver and becoming a part of Urbana’s history. The engraved bricks will be located in-between the walkways of the entrance of Urbana University Stadium. By donating a brick, you are supporting the efforts to purchase and build visitors' bleachers for the stadium and permanent seating behind the new backstop at the Blue Knights' Baseball Field. Both projects will begin in 2013 with help from donors like you. Read More
Toys for Tots Returns to UU
Oct. 31st, 2012The United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Foundation will visit the campus of Urbana University on November 20th and 25th this holiday season. Toys for Tots will collect toys and donations during the Blue Knights' home basketball games on both dates. On Tuesday, November 20th, the men's basketball team welcomes Ashland University to the Grimes Center for the Blue Knights' 2012 home opener. The teams will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. game, and on Sunday, November 25th, the men's team will face-off against Mercyhurst University at 2:00 p.m. Free admission to both games will be granted to anyone who donates an unwrapped toy valued at $10 or more. Toys for Tots will also accept monetary donations, and anyone who donates at least $10 to the Foundation will also receive free admission. Read More
Urbana University Announces Move to Mountain East Conference
Aug. 20th, 2012The presidents of 12 universities, 9 in West Virginia, 2 in Ohio, and 1 in Virginia, jointly announce the formation of a new all-sports collegiate athletic conference to be named the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The new 12-team league’s charter membership will include: Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Notre Dame College, Shepherd University, The University of Charleston, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, Urbana University, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University, and West Virginia Wesleyan College. Great Midwest Athletic Conference Launches G-MACsports.com
Jul. 30th, 2012The Great Midwest Athletic Conference, which was approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee in February of 2012, has officially launched its new online home, G-MACsports.com. The site features interactive content, as well as a place to follow your favorite conference institution. G-MACsports.com will be the new conference site of Urbana University men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, baseball, softball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's cross country and volleyball. Blazer to Become 36th Member of UU Athletic Hall of Fame
Jul. 16th, 2012Urbana University announced plans to induct former coach, administrator and faculty member Bill Blazer into the Athletic Hall of Fame this February. For nearly two decades, Blazer’s dedication to the University was unmatched as he served the campus in many different capacities. For his efforts, he will become the 36th member enshrined into the Urbana University Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 2nd after a home Blue Knight basketball doubleheader. Read More
Grimes Gym Gets a New Look
Jun. 12th, 2012Over the past month, the Warren G. Grimes Center has received a new updated look. First, improvements were made to the bleachers, allowing for more floor space. A new, larger scorer's table was purchased for home sporting events, and now, much of the building is receiving a new coat of paint, including the gym floor, which was also re-designed and re-finished last week. Before the end of the month, hallways, classrooms and the gym walls will also receive a new coat of paint. The old, outdated navy blue color is being replaced with a vibrant royal blue to match the new-look gym floor. New smartboards, desks, tables and chairs will now grace the newly painted classrooms in Grimes. Pictures of the transformation in the gym are posted here. Read More
Mendenhall, Risner Named Blue Knights of the Year
Apr. 28th, 2012Urbana University held its second annual All-Sports Awards Banquet on Saturday night in the Sara Landess Room on campus. Each of the University's 15 intercollegiate athletic programs recognized outstanding performances from the 2011-12 school year, and at the end of the night, the athletic department handed out its most prestigious awards. Georgetown to Join G-MAC
Apr. 27th, 2012Great Midwest Athletic Conference Commissioner Tom Daeger announced on Tuesday that Georgetown College has accepted an invitation to join the G-MAC as a Provisional Member, effective July 1, 2012. Georgetown, which recently announced intentions to apply for NCAA Division II membership, is the eighth member institution of the G-MAC. Virginia-Wise Admitted as Provisional Member of G-MAC
Apr. 23th, 2012The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVa-Wise) has been admitted as a Provisional Member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), effective July 1, 2012. UVa-Wise will enter the G-MAC as the seventh member of the league and begin competition against fellow members in 2013-14. If successfully admitted into NCAA Division II candidacy, the institution will become a Full Member of the G-MAC and will join the charter members of the Conference which includes Cedarville University (Cedarville, Ohio), Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio), Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Ky.), Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, Tenn.), Urbana University (Urbana, Ohio), and Ursuline College (Pepper Pike, Ohio). Foley to Speak at 2nd Annual UU Athletic Banquet

Feb. 4th, 2012Ninety-six student-athletes were recently named to the AD's Fall Honor Roll for maintaining a GPA of 3.25 or better this past semester. The number is just a few shy of an all-time Urbana University record. An additional 18 Blue Knights posted perfect 4.0 GPAs this fall. Read More
