Blue Knights Earn Academic Honor
The Blue Knight women's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the fourth consecutive season. The 2004-05 Urbana University women's soccer team posted a combined 3.09 GPA. The award, first started in 1996, is open to college programs, including NAIA, NCAA I, II, III, and Junior College teams. Teams must be nominated by the head coach and must have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher to qualify. In addition, the head coach/institution must be a current member of the NSCAA in order to be recognized.
"The women work hard on and off the field to achieve success," said Urbana Head Coach Jim Wendling. "I'm honored to have that type of student athlete play for me."
Markley Named Honorable Mention All-American
URBANA, Ohio (December 5, 2005) - Urbana University women's soccer player Liz Markley has earned All-American honors for the second time in her career. Markley was a High School All-American goalkeeper at Greenon and now has earned the honor at Urbana University. The NAIA Women's Soccer All-America Selection Committee recently selected its All-America teams and Markley was named a 2005 NAIA Honorable Mention All-American. Markley, a junior goalkeeper, is the first Blue Knight women's soccer player to be named an All-American. This year she broke Urbana's season (7) and career (10) shut out records. She started 17 games and logged 1,525 minutes on her way to 122 saves and the seven shutouts, all career bests. Markley holds the school record for goalkeeper games played in a career (49) and career minutes played (3,488). Markley has 318 career saves, also a Blue Knight record.
"Liz is a remarkable athlete and goalkeeper," said Urbana Coach Jim Wendling. "She worked very hard this year. I'm proud of her efforts and accomplishments."
She earned 2nd Team All-American Mideast Conference honors and 1st Team All-NAIA Region IX honors this season.
Markley and McCullough Named 2nd Team All-AMC
URBANA, Ohio (December 1, 2005) - Urbana University junior goalkeeper Liz Markley (Cedarville, Ohio/Greenon HS) and sophomore forward Darby McCullough (Urbana, Ohio/Graham HS) were named to the 2005 All-American Mideast Conference South Division Second Team. Markley, also a 1 st Team All-Region IX selection, posted six shutouts and a 1.65 GAA in 2005. McCullough scored eight goals this season and had two assists. Juniors Jessica Boy ( Carlisle, Ohio/Carlisle HS), Sarah Shope ( Dayton, Ohio/Carroll HS) and Marge Warnement ( Marysville, Ohio/Marysville HS) were Honorable Mention selections to the All-AMC Team. Boy led the Blue Knights in points with eight goals and three assists (19 points). Shope and Warnement were the anchors of the Blue Knight defense. Warnement also scored two goals and had three assists, while Shope had two assists.
Markley Named 1st Team All-Region
URBANA, Ohio (November 28, 2005) - Urbana University junior goalkeeper Liz Markley (Cedarville, Ohio/Greenon HS) was recently named 1st Team All-Region IX. Markley had a 1.65 GAA and totaled 124 saves in 18 games where she logged 1,345 minutes. [more]
Blue Knights Nip Yellow Jackets
CEDARVILLE, Ohio (October 18, 2005) - The Blue Knight women's soccer team improved to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the American Mideast Conference with a 3-2 conference win over Cedarville University Tuesday night. Urbana University jumped to a 3-0 lead and held off a late Yellow Jackets' rally. Junior Jessica Boy scored the first goal in the 13th minute on an assist from freshman Abigail Nelson. Freshman Carly Ramsdell scored just five minutes later to give Urbana a 2-0 lead until halftime. Junior Marge Warnement scored what would become the game winner 15 minutes into the second period. Cedarville scored goals in the 65th and 84th minutes. Junior Liz Markley tallied nine saves in goal for the Blue Knights. Urbana hosts Walsh University Saturday at 1 p.m. in a key AMC match.
Blue Knights Blank Huntington
URBANA, Ohio (October 15, 2005) - Sophomore Darby McCullough scored two goals to help Urbana University to a 4-0 win over visiting Huntington College, Ind. (5-8-1) Saturday in non-conference play. McCullough scored the first goal of the match just five minutes in on an assist from freshman Abigail Nelson. Junior Jessica Boy scored six minutes later on an assist from sophomore Brittany Webb to build a 2-0 lead at halftime. McCullough scored her second goal on an assist from Boy. Freshman Jessica Ellis scored the final goal for Urbana on an assist from junior Marge Warnement and Webb. Junior Liz Markley had six saves in goal for Urbana. The Blue Knights (7-9) play at Cedarville Tuesday at 7 p.m. in an American Mideast Conference match.
Second Half Troubles For Urbana Soccer
NORTH CANTON, Ohio (October 8, 2005) - The Blue Knight women's soccer team held Malone College to one goal in the first half, but the Pioneers (7-4-3 overall, 2-1-1 AMC) put away four goals in the second half to take a 5-1 American Mideast Conference victory. Sophomore Julie Glaser scored Urbana's lone goal on an assist from junior Marge Warnement. Urbana (6-9 overall, 2-4 AMC) hosts Huntington College, Ind. this Saturday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference match.
Dragons Burn Blue Knights 4-1
URBANA, Ohio (Oct. 5, 2005) - The Blue Knight women's soccer team lost to nationally ranked Tiffin University, 4-1, Wednesday in an American Mideast Conference match. Urbana put up a good fight with the scored tied 1-1 at halftime. Tiffin (9-2 overall, 4-0 AMC) had 18 shots to Urbana's four. Darby McCullough scored the Blue Knights' lone goal on an assist from Jessica Boy to tie the game with 20:20 left to play in the first half. Liz Marley had nine saves in goal for Urbana, now 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the AMC. Urbana plays at Malone this Saturday at 1 p.m. in an AMC contest.
Blue Knights Blank the Bears
URBANA, Ohio (Oct. 1, 2005) - The Urbana University women's soccer team shut out Shawnee State University, 2-0 this Saturday in an American Mideast Conference match. Sophomore Darby McCullough put away both the goals for the Blue Knights, who led 1-0 at halftime. Freshman Alysha Spence and sophomore Julie Glaser each notched an assist. Junior goalkeeper Liz Markley had three saves for Urbana (6-7 overall, 2-2 AMC). The Blue Knights host Tiffin Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Cougars Shut Out Urbana
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio (September 28, 2005) - The Urbana University women's soccer team lost, 2-0 to Mount Vernon Nazarene in an American Mideast Conference match. Urbana goalkeeper Liz Markley had 14 saves in the defeat. Urbana's record drops to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the AMC. The Lady Cougars improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Blue Knights host Shawnee State Saturday at 1 p.m. in an AMC showdown.
ODU Blanks Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 21, 2005) -- The Blue Knight women's soccer team lost 3-0 to Ohio Dominican University in an American Mideast Conference match Wednesday. Junior Liz Markley had 11 saves in goal for Urbana, 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the AMC. Freshman Samantha Arnett had 8 saves for the Blue Knights. Urbana plays at Mount Vernon next Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a conference match up.
St. Vincent Powers Past Urbana
LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 19, 2005) - The Blue Knight women's soccer team lost, 4-1, to St. Vincent College Monday night in a conference cross over match.
Freshman Abigail Nelson scored Urbana's only goal on an assist from freshman Alysha Spence. Junior goalkeeper Liz Markley had 12 saves.
Urbana, now 5-5, plays at Ohio Dominican in an American Mideast Conference showdown this Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Urbana Falls to Nationally Ranked Griffins
URBANA, Ohio (Sept. 11, 2005) - The Blue Knight women's soccer team, just back from Pennsylvania and a hard fought 3-1 loss to Geneva Saturday, battled hard against nationally ranked Seton Hill Sunday. Urbana held the Griffins off the entire first half, but Seton Hill struck twice in the second half for the 2-0 victory. Junior goalkeeper Liz Markley had 14 saves for Urbana (4-3). Seton Hill, ranked 33rd in the nation, improves to 5-0.
Geneva Bests the Blue Knights
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Sept. 10, 2005) - Jessica Boy scored the only goal for Urbana University Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Geneva College.
Boy's score came on a penalty kick. Liz Markley had 7 saves in goal for Urbana (4-2, 1-0 AMC). Geneva improves its record to 2-3-1.

Nelson Finds Back of the Net Twice in AMC Win
URBANA, Ohio (September 3, 2005) - Freshman Abigail Nelson scored two goals in Urbana's 2-0 win over first-year program Rio Grande Saturday.
The Lady Knights had 21 shots to Rio's 1 shot. Nelson put away two goals on assists from Sarah Shope, a junior, and Darby McCullough, a sophomore. Urbana improves to 3-1 this season. Rio is 0-1 after playing the first women's soccer game in school history. The Blue Knights host Daemen College, NY Sunday at 1 p.m.
Markley Notches 12 Saves; Wildcats Slip One Past
URBANA, Ohio (August 31, 2005) - Urbana University junior goalkeeper Liz Markley had 12 saves in a 1-0 loss to nationally ranked Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats, ranked 27th in the nation in the NAIA Women's Soccer Preseason Poll, hit a torrent of shots on net and Markley stopped nearly everything that came her way.
Indiana Wesleyan scored the only goal of the match Rachel Gerdin's strike directly under the cross bar.
The Blue Knight record is now 2-1, while IWU's improves to 1-0. Urbana hosts the University of Rio Grande in their American Mideast Conference opener this Saturday at 1 p.m.
Blue Knight Women's Soccer Posts Second Shutout
PEPPER PIKE, Ohio (August 27, 2005) -- The Urbana University women's soccer team posted its second shutout in as many matches. The Blue Knights blanked Ursuline College, 3-0, to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Jessica Boy, Marge Warnament and Darby McCullough each scored a goal. Abigail Nelson notched two assists. Liz Markley had her second shutout in goal with seven saves.
Urbana hosts Indiana Wesleyan this Wednesday in their home opener at 5 p.m.
Blue Knight Frosh Scores Game Winner
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (August 26, 2005) - The Blue Knight women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win in its season opener at Notre Dame College (OH), Friday night.
Freshman Alysha Spence (Logan, Ohio) scored the lone goal of the match in the opening minute of the second half.
Notre Dame drops to 0-1, while Urbana improves to 1-0 on the young season. The Blue Knights play at Ursuline College this Saturday at 1 p.m.
Wendling Named Chair of NAIA Region IX Women's Soccer
URBANA, Ohio (April 25, 2005) - Urbana University men's and women's soccer coach Jim Wendling was named the NAIA Region IX Women's Soccer Sports Chair, announced Region IX Chair Skip Lord.
The coaches of Region IX conducted a vote and selected Wendling - who has coached both the Blue Knight men's and women's soccer teams for seven years - to assume the responsibilities as the new Region IX Chair. Wendling, of Huber Heights, will fill the position vacated by Houghton College's David Lewis.
"We welcome Jim and know he will do a good job," said Lord. "We look forward to his leadership and participation."
