Blue Knights Finish in 15th at Windy Knoll

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (October 11, 2009) - Battling the chilly conditions, the Urbana University women's golf team finished in 15th place at Wittenberg University's Pat Clouse Invitational at the Windy Knoll Golf Course in Springfield, Ohio.  The Blue Knights played consistent, shooting a team score of 404 on Day 1, followed by a 403 on Day 2.  The team finished just 2 strokes behind Capital in 14th place.  Seventeen teams competed in the event which was won by the University of Findlay.

Once again, senior Cortney Ertel paced the Blue Knights with a first-day round of 95 and a Sunday round of 90.  Ertel carded the lowest score for Urbana in all 4 fall tournaments.  Ertel was followed by matching 206's by Jenna Swihart and Julie Stratton.  Swihart shot 102 on Saturday and a 104 on Sunday.  Stratton had identical scores on the opposite days.  Rounding out the Blue Knights' scoring was Katie Rupley (103-107) and Jessica Lang (116-108).  Lang's 108 was a new low for the freshman playing in her first collegiate season.

Ertel's 14th Place Finish Leads Blue Knights

Senior Cortney Ertel once again led the Blue Knights with a 14th place finish at ODU.PATASKALA, Ohio (October 3, 2009) - Urbana University golfer Cortney Ertel finished in a tie for 14th place in a field of over 70 golfers to pace the Blue Knights at the Auld Crafters Kisor Classic hosted by Ohio Dominican University at the Cumberland Trail Golf Course.  Ertel opened the tournament with a top 10 score on Day 1.  She followed her 85 with an 88 on Saturday to finish at +29 for the tournament.  The Blue Knights posted a 402 on Day 1, and for the second tournament in a row, Urbana improved their Day 2 score by at least 30 strokes.  The team fired a 372 on Saturday to finish in 10th place.

Junior Julie Stratton was, once again, right behind Ertel for the Blue Knights.  Stratton shot 96-89 to finish in a tie for 33rd.  She was followed by Blue Knights Katie Rupley (108-97), Jenna Swihart (115-98), and Jessica Lang (113-119).  Rupley's second-day 97 was just 1 stroke off her personal best, and Swihart's 17-stroke improvement came just days after she paced the Blue Knights with an 18-stroke improvement at Findlay.

The Blue Knights have one more tournament this fall.  They will compete at the Pat Clouse Invitational hosted by Wittenberg University on Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11.  [Full Tournament Results]

Blue Knights Take 9th at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio (September 29, 2009) - The Urbana University women's golf team had an impressive showing on Day 2 of the Bing Beall Classic on Tuesday morning.  The Blue Knights cut 34 strokes from their Day 1 total to finish with a team score of 379 on Tuesday.  Under extremely windy conditions on Monday, Urbana shot a 413.  Grand Valley State University won the tournament, which was hosted by the University of Findlay, with a 2-day total of 619.

Senior Cortney Ertel fired a Day Two 83 at the Bing Beall Classic, which was 1 shot off the school record.Leading the charge for the Blue Knights was senior Cortney Ertel (Woodstock, Ohio/Triad HS).  Ertel battled the cold and windy conditions to post a 93 on Day 1.  She followed that performance with an 83 on Day 2 to finish in a tie for 34th overall.  Her score of 83 was 1 stroke off the school record, which she set in 2006 and matched in the spring of 2009.  Junior Julie Stratton (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge HS) also played well, despite the tough conditions.  Stratton led the Blue Knights with a first-day 92, and she followed with an even better 88 on Day 2.  Stratton's 88 is tied for the 15th best score in school history.  She was just 3 strokes away from her personal best.

Senior Jenna Swihart , junior Katie Rupley and freshman Jessica Lang rounded out the Blue Knights scoring.  Swihart posted a 2-day total of 218 and showed the most improvement on the squad, trimming 18 strokes off her Day 1 total.  Rupley was right behind Swihart with a 219, and Lang shot a 234.

The golfers hit the links later this week at the Ohio Dominican Invitational.  The Blue Knights will play 36 holes over Friday and Saturday at the Cumberland Trail Golf Course in Pataskala, Ohio. [Bing Beall Classic Results]

Blue Knights Begin Fall Season at Walsh

NORTH CANTON, Ohio (September 15, 2009) - The Urbana University women's golf team kicked off the 2009 fall season at the Walsh University Fall Classic. The Blue Knights played 36 holes over 2 days and took 8th place out of 10 teams.  Walsh won the event which was held at the Sanctuary Golf Course in North Canton, Ohio. 

Urbana was led by senior Cortney Ertel (Woodstock, Ohio/Triad HS).  Ertel sat in 12th place after a Day 1 score of 86.  She followed with a 96 on Day 2 to finish in 24th place.  Junior Julie Stratton (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge HS) shot 96-99, followed by a 105-102 from senior Jenna Swihart (Waynesburg, Ohio/Sandy Valley HS).  Junior Katie Rupley (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer HS) and newcomer Jessica Lang rounded out the Blue Knights scoring.

Next, the Blue Knights host a fundraiser at their home course, the Urbana Country Club, on Sunday, September 20th at 11:00 a.m.  All are welcome to participate.  The cost to participate in the 18-hole event is $20 per golfer.  Any additional donations go directly to the women's golf team and the Urbana University Athletic Department.  Click here for more information and to register for the event.
