URBANA, Ohio (April 9, 2010) - For the second time in as many weeks, a junior first baseman from the Blue Knights softball team has been named the Family Dentistry Student-Athlete of the Week. Two weeks ago, a hot-hitting Maria Hendricks grabbed the top spot, and today, her teammate Kayla Nenninger (West Milton, OH/Milton-Union HS) slugged her way to the top. In 3 games, Nenninger hit .667 and reached base at a .750 clip. In a 5-4 win over nationally ranked Marian University, Nenninger carried the Blue Knights to victory with a 2-run double in her first at-bat and a solo home run in her second at-bat. Marian avoided more damage by walking Nenninger in her only other 2 plate appearances.
Kayla's current 6-game hitting streak is second on the team. (Brooke Shultz currently has a 9-game hitting streak.) Perhaps, the most remarkable part of her streak is that twice she extended it in pinch-hitting appearances. During the streak, she has also raised her batting average from .118 to .300, which is good for 4th on the team. In addition to her hot hitting, Kayla currently leads the team in fielding percentage amongst players with at least 10 fielding chances this season. She has made only 1 error in 69 chances, good for a .986 fielding percentage. Her career fielding percentage of .975 is just thousandths of percentage points behind the top 2 fielders all-time at UU (Molly Morris .981 and Hendricks .980).
