URBANA, Ohio (April 2, 2010) - Urbana University 1B/C Matt Mays (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton HS) wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers this week. The junior collected an RBI in all 5 games and hit .533 to help his team climb back to .500 with a 3-2 week. Mays' offensive outburst earned him top honors as the Family Dentistry Student-Athlete of the Week.
Mays' big week began with a 3-for-3 performance in UU's 11-7 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene University. Mays also scored and collected his first 2 RBIs of the week. In a tighter 4-1 win over MVNU last Saturday, Mays drove in another run. He kept the streak alive with a 1st inning RBI against the 17th ranked team in the country on Tuesday night, and on Thursday, Mays erupted for 6 RBIs and 2 HRs in a doubleheader split with Cedarville. His week ended with 10 RBIs, 4 runs, a double and 2 home runs. Currently, Mays leads the team or is tied for the team league in batting average (.450), slugging percentage (.733), RBIs (19), doubles (8), home runs (3), and total bases (44). This is even more remarkable when you consider Mays was hitting just .167 after the Blue Knights 1st 10 games. Since March 11th, Mays has been on fire, hitting .545 over 13 games with 16 RBIs, 8 doubles and 3 HRs.
Mays wasn't the only Blue Knight on fire this week. He just narrowly edged teammate Brad Cockerill (.692 BA, 5 RBIs, 2 doubles, 1 HR) for this week's top billing.
