URBANA, Ohio (November 13, 2009) - Senior wide receiver Ian Iler (Redford, Mich./Union HS) entered last Saturday's game with Seton Hill with just 36 carries on the season. In Urbana's version of the wildcat, Iler occasionally lines up behind center, and through the first 9 games, he averaged 4 carries per game in the formation. When starting QB David Gerber left a 14-7 game in the first half against Seton Hill with a shoulder injury, the Blue Knights called on Iler to carry the load. Iler racked up 65 yards on 20 carries, including 3 rushing touchdowns, tying an Urbana record. His performance helped the Blue Knights run away from the Griffins, 30-14. Today, Iler was named the Blue Knight Student-Athlete of the Week.
In the first half, Iler also broke Urbana's single season mark for receptions, catching his 77th pass on the season, passing Marco Knorr who had 76 catches a decade ago. Iler currently leads the Blue Knights in receptions, receiving yards (754), rushing TDs (4), points scored (48), and all-purpose yards (1,039). He has 4 games in 2009 of 10+ catches, including a career-best 13 catches against ODU 2 weeks ago.
Iler's Blue Knights sit at 5-5 with 1 game remaining against Central State University. A win against the Marauders would tie the best mark in school history at 6-5.
Others strongly considered for this week's award include Iler's teammates Chad Kinkead, Travis Brisco, and Dan Goodrum. On Thursday, Kinkead was named D2Football.com's Independent Defensive Player of the Week. Also considered for the award were swimmers Samantha Cowgill, Rachel Kelly, Said Mosquera and Brian Hurley.
