URBANA, Ohio (May 1, 2010) - For the second consecutive weekend, the rains stopped just long enough for the Urbana University baseball team to squeeze in an afternoon doubleheader. On Saturday, the Blue Knights took advantage of the parting clouds and swept the visiting Thunderhawks from Miami University-Middletown by scores of 11-5 and 22-4.
Blue Knight catcher Brad Cockerill doubled Urbana's lead from 4 to 8 in the first game with one swing of the bat in the 4th inning. His grand slam was the beginning of a 6-run inning as Urbana scored the first 10 runs on 11 hits. Senior Matt Murphy (pictured) collected the bulk of the hits, finishing 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs. The all-time stolen base leader also added 3 more to his career total. Junior Zach Roll was 1 for 2 with a 2-run homer, and senior Owen Donelon finished 2 for 2 with a run. Sophomore Julius Storey improved to a perfect 3-0 on the mound, allowing 3 earned runs in 6 innings in just his 2nd career start.
The Blue Knights' bats stayed hot in Game 2. The home team batted around in the 1st inning, scoring 5 runs on 6 hits, including a 2-run blast to centerfield from junior Matt Mays. Mays made his return on Saturday after missing almost a month with a wrist injury. The dinger was his 5th of the season, which tied him for the team lead for exactly 1 inning. Freshman Greg Liming hit his 6th home run of the season in the bottom of the 2nd to take back the team lead. Liming finished 2 for 2 with 5 RBIs, and Urbana's lead quickly ballooned to 16-0 after 2 complete innings.
With the game out of reach, Urbana's most prolific relief pitcher, senior Shane Pfouts (pictured), got into the action. Making a rare appearance as a pinch hitter, the senior led off the 3rd inning with a solo blast over the left field fence. It was the first at-bat by a Blue Knight pitcher this season. In Pfouts' second at-bat, he tripled to the fence in right-center.
Senior Andrew Harrell (pictured) had a final game to remember. He capped his 4 for 4 day with his first career home run in his final collegiate at-bat. He finished with 5 RBIs, 4 runs, 3 stolen bases and he made his first career relief appearance in the top of the 5th. Senior Steve Froese and Owen Donelon also had big games at the plate. Froese was 3 for 4 with 3 runs and an RBI. Donelon was 2 for 3 with a run and 2 RBIs. Senior starting pitcher Cody Lawhorn picked up the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs on just 5 hits through the first 4 innings. The win was the 6th of his season, tying him for the 8th most in a season in UU history.
Urbana ends its season at 19-21 with the sweep. Miami-Middletown falls to 11-24. The teams were supposed to play a season-ending doubleheader on Sunday, but due to a couple of serious injuries suffered on Saturday, the Thunderhawks had to call off the game. Today was the final collegiate game for Blue Knight seniors Matt Murphy, Andrew Harrell, Shane Pfouts, Owen Donelon, Nick Stanovich, David Patz, Steve Froese, Cody Lawhorn and Dustin Lacy.
